Residents urged to put out grey food waste bin for collection to get liners

Residents are being urged to remember to put out their grey food waste bin for collection over the
next fortnight to a supply of liners.

Starting on Tuesday 12 March, our refuse collectors will be delivering two rolls of the green liners to
every household that has a grey food waste bin outside of their property.

Each roll contains 40 liners, meaning every property will receive 80 liners which could last up to a
year.

Residents are also being urged to think of the environment when using the liners and ensure they
are full before transferring them from the inside caddy to the bigger outside grey food waste bin.
Cllr Gavin Elsey, Cabinet Member for Environment and Climate Change, said: “We very much
encourage residents to use our food waste collection service to prevent unnecessary food waste
being disposed of in the black bin which is much more costly for us to process.

“As such we are committed to providing free liners to support residents using this service. However,
with the prices of the liners having trebled over the past few years we are conscious of the cost of
supplying liners and the volumes being used.

“Therefore to ensure we are being fair to all residents, from next week we will be delivering two rolls
of liners to every household that presents their grey food waste bin for collection.

“In future we aim to limit each household to three to four rolls a year to enable us to keep the liners
free of charge to all residents.

“Residents will still be able to request additional liners if they really need them but we urge people
to use them responsibly and only replace them in their in-house caddy when they are full.

“The recycling education team will be in the areas when the liner delivery takes place to door knock
the households not participating in the service, to encourage participation and deliver leaflets on the
food waste services.”

The first liners will be delivered next Tuesday (12 March 2024) to Parnwell, Fengate, Eastgate, South
Gladstone, Lincoln Road, the city centre, Broadway, Dogsthorpe Road, Park Road, Garton End Road,
Newark Avenue, Eastfield Road, North Eastfield and South Eastfield.

All cooked and uncooked solid food waste should go into your grey food waste caddy. Cooking oil
should be allowed to cool and then poured into a plastic bottle no bigger than one litre. It can then
be put into the large grey food waste bin for collection.

Collected food waste is sent to an anaerobic digestion facility where it’s turned into fertilizer for
agriculture and biogas which is used to generate renewable electricity.

Recycling food waste via your food waste caddy is better for the environment and saves the council
around £870,000 a year in disposal costs.
